Sprachreise der 6. Klassen nach Irland

For your future

Just when temperatures started to cool at home, classes 6AB travelled to Ireland. Their destination was Dun Laoghaire, a coastal town just south of the capital, where they spent 7 days improving their English and exploring Irish culture.

All students stayed with host families in and around Dun Laoghaire. Living with local families gave them a first-hand experience of everyday Irish life and many opportunities to practise English beyond the classroom. While most did enjoy the Irish cuisine more than expected, the chlorine water certainly took some getting used to.

Each weekday morning, the students attended lessons at the local language school. Groups were often sent into town to interview people, observe daily life, or collect information for their projects.

A key element of the trip was the Eric Project, an intercultural learning activity inspired by Shaun Tan’s picture book Eric. During their stay in Ireland, each group took a small “Eric” figure on their excursions, taking photos in various places and situations. Back home, these pictures are now used for a creative reflection project about what it means to be a visitor in another country.

Much like any other language trip, our week also included several excursions. The group visited Glendalough, where they admired the lakes and mountain scenery, and later enjoyed some time at Brittas Bay under unusually blue skies. Another stop was Powerscourt Gardens, famous for its landscapes and views of the Wicklow Mountains. A guided tour of Dublin provided an insight into the city’s history, architecture, and culture.

One afternoon, the students took part in a workshop on Gaelic games. Two local coaches introduced them to Gaelic football.
